Colors and patterns make great statements in any room. The trick is how the colors and patterns are presented.
Start with colors that inspire you. Do you love bold, bright colors or are you more inclined to visualize yourself in a soft, pastel room? Look for patterns that you love and can visualize in your living space. Do you love geometric shapes or do you like more organic type shapes? (think swirls and circles) It becomes a balancing act to find that stylish way to transform any room into something special. My particular color obsession is jade green, navy with persimmon accents and any geometric pattern.
When it comes to mixing patterns and colors in a room, there should be no rules. Putting lots of bold patterns in strong colors in an area creates lots of fun and energy showing you are not afraid to show your personality. You can easily do this in one room or throughout your home. You can also choose one lead pattern, then choose lots of complimenting patterns and coordinating colors to support the lead pattern and color in that room. For instance, you can start with a Greek key pattern in a navy and then you can add a stripe pattern in a teal color with a small check in yellow. It is important that you decorate with colors and patterns that you love and not what is “in” at the moment.
Remember, color and great design are trend proof! Trends entertain briefly but colors and patterns that never go out of style are inspired by timeless experiences and surroundings. Patterns or designs that have stood the test of time are paisley, stipes and small checks. Generally these patterns can be worked into a number of different looks.
Be inspired! Show your style! Beauty comes in many forms and what better place to celebrate it than in your home. Picking colors and patterns that appeal to you is the first step to creative a room you love!
